Course Purpose

Spanish 2 is a continuing course for students who have successfully completed their Spanish 1 requirement with a grade of C or higher. Learning a language is an ongoing process, the second year of Spanish allows the students to have a stronger grasp of the structure and grammar of the language, and a better understanding of the Spanish and Latin American Cultures. Three consecutive years of Spanish are required to graduate from Gateway.

Course Objectives

The course encompasses the four-language skills: listening, speaking, reading comprehension and writing along with the proper use of technology (web and word processing). Because it emphasizes the use of Spanish for active communication the class is, as much as possible, conducted in the target language. By the end of this course students are expected to demonstrate adequate competency in :

  • Understanding dialogs, simple conversations and instruction in Spanish.
  • Responding and interacting in Spanish (beginner/intermediate level)
  • Writing dialogs and short descriptive paragraphs in the present and past tenses (75 words or more)
  • Understanding and correcting their errors.
  • Recognizing and discussing the Cultural aspects of the Spanish speaking World
  • Researching and working on line
  • Using the word processor
  • Creating a Power Point Presentation

What the student needs for class every day

  • The “carpeta de español” (binder) with 5 sections is a learning tool. Students are taught how to organize their work in order to develop good study skills. This binder will be checked periodically and graded before semester finals The 5 sections are: Notes, Class Work,Grammar, Vocabulary and Handouts. The student is to write his/her name on the spine of the binder.
